This is a look at two portable SAM launchers, the FIM-92 Stinger by 21st Century and the SA-18 Grouse by Zacca.
These weapons are classified as a Man-Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS) hence the title.
21st Century Stinger Anti-Aircraft Weapons Set: This was released around 1998 under the Ultimate Soldier category by 21st Century Toys.
The FIM-92 Stinger is a shoulder fired, infra-red homing Surface-to-Air missile launcher developed/used by the US military. It started service around 1981.
The FIM-92 was first used in actual combat in the 1982 Falklands War. And it was the major weapon that turn the tide of the war in Afghanistan against the Soviets.
Zacca SA-18 Anti-Armor set: Zacca is one of those new “1/6 manufacturer” competing in the 1/6 accessories market. They released around 2008 (?) a set of anti-armor Bazooka sets (i’m not familiar with what the official name of their product set is) composing of a variety of missile launchers.
The SA-18 is actually a US designation of what is the 9k38 Igla shoulder fired infra-red homing surface-to-air missile launcher. It is known as the “Grouse” by NATO.
The 9k38 Igla is Soviet/Russian made and entered service in 1983.
The 9k38 Igla (and other Igla variations) is reported to have shot down not only military but also civilian aircrafts!
Both weapons are capable of being mounted on vehicles.
The main thing you will notice about the weapon sets by 21st century is the quality of plastic material used. It’s on the heavy side and i think a bit sturdier and better than Zacca. There was no decals on both weapons, i suggest application of paint weathering to enhanced and have a realistic metal look.
